Get Cumbria Buzzing!’s final celebration of Pollinators will take place on the Brampton Road Campus in Carlisle. Right on top Hadrians wall itself. The Festival kicks off with a Wild Live broadcast from the Stanix theatre at the University of Cumbria, across the Wildlife Trusts You tube channel led by Craig Bennet Chief Executive of the Wildlife Trusts. Followed by a hybrid conference on the 23rd which will involve a theatre and virtual audience and content, hosted by Author and passionate Bee Advocate Bridget Strawbridge Howard, the conference will feature talks and workshops, with a key note talk by Bestselling Author Prof Dave Goulson. We’ll showcase the work of pollinator projects locally, nationally and further afield, and demonstrate how real activity on the ground is making a difference for pollinating insects. A wide range of afternoon workshops will be hosted by projects from across the UK, including developing pollinator strategies, Bumblebee Conservation, Planting for Pollinators, Scottish Wildlife Trust and many more. The weekend long festival will include film premieres, photography, music, arts and writing and poetry events across the city. Festival partners are Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts, University of Cumbria, Carlisle City Council and Bumblebee Conservation Trust. The festival will celebrate the culmination of Get Cumbria Buzzing, the award-winning project which has been running in north and west Cumbria since 2019. More than half of UK bee, butterfly and moth species have declined in the past 50 years, and 30 species of bees’ face extinction. Over the last 75 years we’ve lost 97% of our flower rich meadows, 50% of our hedgerows, and 60% of flowering plants are in decline. Get Cumbria Buzzing was set up to combat this loss and we’ve been working closely with partners and local communities in north west Cumbria, creating over 115 hectares of wildflower-rich habitat for pollinators, at over 62 sites. Get Cumbria Buzzing is funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund, National Highways, and others. Partners include: Allerdale Borough Council, Buglife, Butterfly Conservation, Copeland Borough Council, Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre, Florence Arts Centre, Highways England, National Trust, Solway Coast AONB and Workington Nature Partnership.
