We begin our walk at Walltown Quarry Country Park and make our way westwards enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The Roman Fort of Magna, is on our left as we descend towards the remains of the 14C Thirlwall Castle. As we proceed along The Wall Path, we’ll discuss all the history before, during and after construction as the Wall’s ditch systems become clear and stones utilised from the Wall to form boundaries of the fields can be identified. At Gilsland we take a lunch break at Poltross Burn Milecastle one of the finest on the Wall and hear about the often turbulent history of later years. Continuing we follow the visible remains of the Wall, with its signal towers to Willowford Farm and the Centurion Stone. Walking down to the remains of abutments of three Roman bridges before heading over the River Irthing and climbing up to our destination of Birdoswald Fort, Roman Banna with the opportunity to join in an optional guided tour of the Fort.
