The Senhouse Museum will be celebrating the 1900th Anniversary of the founding of Alauna Roman fort – the headquarters of the Western Coastal Defences which continue down the Cumbrian coast beyond Hadrian’s Wall to Ravenglass. After the Romans left, the area was settled by Vikings, then became part of Scotland before being invaded by Normans. By the 1600’s it was known as Ellenfoot, before being renamed Maryport by Landowner Humphrey Senhouse in honour of his wife, when the modern town and port were created. There will be Romans, Vikings, and Norma/Saxon historical interpreters providing a virtual walk through history. This event has been provided by the The Solway Coast Business Group and generously funded by Allerdale Borough Council and Cumbria County Council.
