Delivered by Northumberland Libraries

As part of their Photographing the Roman Wall: Then and Now project, Northumberland Libraries will be hosting an exhibition of photographs by the Hexham photographer and archaeologist, John Pattison Gibson (1838 – 1912). The exhibition will be available to view at the Haltwhistle Library and Community Hub from 8 September, 2022 during library hours:
Mon to Fri: 10am – 1pm and 1.30pm – 4pm
Saturday: 10am – 1pm

The Gibson Collection is housed at Northumberland Archives and the exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to view photographs from the collection.

Gibson was a highly skilled photographer and he received many awards both locally and abroad. Aside from his passion for photography, Gibson had an avid interest in archaeology and the Roman Wall in particular. He participated in several excavations and used his photographs to document the findings. The photographs date from c1890 to c1910 and for historians and the public alike they provide a unique record of the wall and the countryside at this time.

This project has been made possible thanks to a National Lottery Project Grant from Arts Council England.
