Delivered by St Michael’s Church
It is not easy to see and appreciate the remains of the Roman frontier in and around Burgh-by-Sands. This talk will piece together an intriguing jigsaw puzzle, drawing together the evidence for the forts here, for the garrisons, and for the associated civilian settlement. In an area where it is all too easy to say that there is nothing to see, the clues that surround us will be illustrated, and the influence of the Roman infrastructure on the modern village will be explored. We will even probe the mystery of Burgh Marsh …
The venue for the talk is the 12th-century St Michael’s church which stands on the site of the Roman fort and which is partly built of the stone that the Roman army quarried and dressed. The talk will be given by Humphrey Welfare, former Chair of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site Partnership Board.
