Delivered by Great Guided Tours
Walking from Walltown Quarry Country Park at Greenhead we make our way westwards enjoying the spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Descending towards the remains of 14C Thirwall Castle. As we proceed along Hadrian’s Wall Path we will discuss the history before, during and after construction as the Wall’s ditch systems become clearer and stones from the Wall can be seen forming boundaries of the fields. We pause at Poltross Burn Milecastle, Gilsland, likely to have been the first one built and hear about the later periods of an often turbulent history. Continuing we follow the line of the Wall down to the remains of abutments of three Roman bridges before crossing over the River Irthing and climbing up to Harrows Hill Milecastle and onto Birdoswald Roman Fort.
