Great Guided Tours present a guided walk beginning at Walltown Quarry, where you will make your way westwards, enjoying the spectacular views of the countryside, before descending down towards the remains of Thirwall castle. You’ll discuss the history before, during and after construction as the Wall’s ditch system becomes clear and stones utilised from the Wall to form boundaries of fields can be identified. At Gilsland, you will take a break for lunch at Poltross Burn Milecastle, one of the finest on the Wall and hear about the often turbulent history of the area in later times. Continuing, you follow the visible remains of the Wall with its signal towers to Willowford farm with its centurion stone. Walking down to the remains of the abutments of three Roman Bridges, you will cross the River Irthing and make your way up to Birdoswald Fort, Roman Banna with the opportunity to join an optional guided tour of the Fort.
