Hadrian’s Wall in Newcastle

Online

Year long, from 09 May 2022

Free

Delivered by St James Heritage and Environment Group

A film depicting the real route of Hadrian’s Wall through Newcastle. The aim is to make people aware of the exact location of the Wall and associated structures and settlements. The film will be interspersed with short clips illustrating relevant places along the route, involving local residents where possible. We want to to show visually how the route relates to actual recognisable places today. The film will be completed by Spring 2022, with a series of showings taking place throughout the rest of the year. The film will be accessible through our website and copies will be produced for use by schools and other organisations.

The Living Wall (1974) – Provided by Yorkshire Film Archive & North East Film Archive Originally transmitted in 1974, The Living Wall is a Tyne Tees Television documentary co-produced with Border Television, which looks at the history of Hadrian’s Wall and the people who lived and worked around the wall in the 1970s. This unique screening close to Hadrian’s Wall itself will be introduced by National Park staff and there will be an opportunity following the film for questions about past and present activity on Hadrian’s Wall.

Included in the ticket is the opportunity to take a guided walk from The Sill to an iconic section of Hadrian’s Wall at Peel Crag.

The walk is less than a mile but will include the opportunity for further discussion so will take approximately 45 minutes.

The film screening takes place at approximately 12.30pm followed by the walk at 2pm.

Throughout November and December 2022.

The word ‘Saturnalia’ has the meaning of ‘an occasion of wild revelry or indulgence’.

Throughout November and December we are inviting anyone and everyone to join the festivities and deliver their own Saturnalia celebrations, events and activities to make this a truly wall-wide knees up.

We’re inviting YOU to get involved and host an event or activity for Saturnalia as part of Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Festival, and it could be anything from hosting a Saturnalia-themed Christmas Party in your local village hall to a banquet in your living room or local pub.

You could encourage your neighbours to decorate their windows or create lanterns for their doorsteps or nominate the most mischievous member of your community as Lord of Misrule to preside over your celebrations.

Click here for Saturnalia Packs developed by artist, Hannah Fox, to help you with your celebrations including traditional recipes, Saturnalia Songs, and inspiration on themes, activities and making your own decorations.

Anyone can deliver activity – individuals, groups, businesses – and at any scale.

It can be a public event with tickets, or just with a group of friends, a business venture or a solo activity. All activities will be listed on the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Festival website to either advertise them or document them or both.

If you’re interested in delivering a Saturnalia activity, no matter how big or small, please complete the form below to register your interest:

Organisers are expected to be responsible for the management, safety, local marketing, and funding for their events, so please ensure you have considered this in putting your ideas together.
