APERTURA Volunteer Invigilator Opportunity

APERTURA by Ed Carter, Nicky Kirk and Tony Broomhead is an interactive sonic sculpture set in the picturesque setting of Northumberland National Park’s, Walltown Country Park.

It is a contemporary large scale public artwork that celebrates 1900 years of the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Festival.

Inspired by the World Heritage Site and the stunning landscapes of Northumberland National Park, APERTURA will frame, and provide a new viewpoint to this section of Hadrian’s Wall, inviting audiences to experience a constantly changing, interactive spectacle of shimmering light and sound.

Visitors will experience a sound sculpture made up of 1900 copper wind chimes that creates an evolving soundscape the everchanging breeze.

Opportunity

We are looking for volunteers to invigilate the installation throughout its exhibition period.

This will include:

  • Welcoming visitors to the installation
  • Supporting visitors to interact with the installation, for example showing them how they can help to get the chimes to play on a less windy day
  • Supporting visitors to decorate a wooden sail which can then be attached to one of the windchimes, both helping the chimes play in the wind, and contributing to the artwork
  • Ensuring that visitors are interacting with the installation safely and appropriately, e.g. not climbing on the structure or pulling on the chimes
  • Telling people about the project, and giving information about wider Hadrian’s Wall 1900 activity
  • Encouraging visitors to complete evaluation surveys
  • Supporting visitors on their visit to Walltown Country Park, for example if they ask about toilets or refreshments onsite

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a once in a lifetime experience, commissioned by Northumberland County Council on behalf of the Hadrian’s Wall Partnership for the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Festival.

Requirements

Volunteers must be over the age of 18, and will need to be available for at least one shift during the dates specified below.

APERTURA is on display at Walltown Country Park. It is public artwork situated outdoors so volunteers will need to be happy to be outdoors for long periods of time, in potentially inclement weather. Volunteer will be able to take breaks inside at the visitor centre onsite.

Volunteers should be confident dealing with members of the public and encouraging them to engage with the work, and should ideally be fit and well enough to make the journey of approximately 400m up and down from the car park to the installation potentially a few times each shift.
