“Meet the Ancestors” – re-enactors, displays, crafts, folk music and demonstrations.
Location: Burgh-by-Sands Village Hall and Village Green (weather permitting)
“Burgh-by-Sands will be celebrating its 1900th Birthday! When the Emperor Hadrian ordered the building of his Wall, the plan included Aballava fort to guard the Solway crossings which continued to be used for many centuries after the Romans departed.
The village community and Solway Coast Business Group invite you to come and experience the long and turbulent history of the parish though re-enactments, presentations, and demonstrations. No entry fee.
All day events:-
- Roman Legio VIII re-enactors explain their military weapons in full army kit
- Cumbria based Herlid Viking re-enactors, the Dark Ages life of settlement & war.
- Historia Normannis medieval re-enactors display the culture, crafts & customs of the Saxon/Normans.
- Reiver re-enactor group, Cheviot Steel Bonnets also attending
- St Michael’s Church tower – guides will show you up the 12th Century fortified church tower (Normally locked!)
1:00pm & 3pm – musical interludes:
- Solway Folk band – live folk songs old & new about the Solway
- Refreshments available all day in the Village Hall
Weather permitting:
- Outside demonstrations & displays on the Village Green
- 7:30pm Comedy play: “Gone to the Wall” (£5 pre-booking recommended)

Activity Description (short):
Launching #HW1900 at Bowness-on-Solway with a collection of live performances, talks, and videos to showcase moments from 1900 years of history: Hadrian Comes to Britannia; Archaeologists & Guest Literary Speakers including International Author – Ben Kane; Roman, Viking, and Norman Living History & video memorabilia.
