Fools Fest

Highfield Middle School, Highfield Lane, Prudhoe, NE42 6EY

10 Dec 2022

  • Wheelchair accessibile

Delivered by
Mortal Fools

Join Mortal Fools Youth Theatre for the second of two nights of creativity, festivity, and fun, as we host Fools Fest!

Fools Fest is a celebration of all things creative; where the young people are in charge, and anything goes. These festival nights will showcase a variety of mini-performances, created and performed by our young people – across theatre, film, improv, music and more!

From folklore and fairy tales to music and monologues, there’s something for everybody at Fools Fest – plus tasty refreshments to get you in the festival mood. So join us and get ready to eat, drink, and be merry at Fools Fest!

On Friday 2nd December we’ll be showcasing work from our two Ashington-based groups and our online youth theatre group.

On Saturday 10th December, our groups from Riding Mill and Prudhoe will come together for an evening of performance curated as part of the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Festival.

Our youth theatre groups in the Tyne Valley have themed their performances specifically around the Saturnalia Festival, with their pieces being inspired by contemporary responses to the rich heritage of Hadrian’s Wall. Fools Fest embraces the Saturnalia element of role reversal by putting children and young people who are growing up along Hadrian’s Wall in the lead.

This event is supported by Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Community Grants, made possible with National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Performance venue is fully accessible. If you’re a wheelchair user, please let us know by emailing Rachel.Horton@mortalfools.org.uk

For more information, please contact info@mortalfools.org.uk, or phone 0191 580 1250 (please leave a message if we are not available).

Create your own Saturnalia Event

01 Nov 2022 - 30 Nov 2022

Throughout November and December 2022.

The word ‘Saturnalia’ has the meaning of ‘an occasion of wild revelry or indulgence’.

Throughout November and December we are inviting anyone and everyone to join the festivities and deliver their own Saturnalia celebrations, events and activities to make this a truly wall-wide knees up.

We’re inviting YOU to get involved and host an event or activity for Saturnalia as part of Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Festival, and it could be anything from hosting a Saturnalia-themed Christmas Party in your local village hall to a banquet in your living room or local pub.

You could encourage your neighbours to decorate their windows or create lanterns for their doorsteps or nominate the most mischievous member of your community as Lord of Misrule to preside over your celebrations.

Click here for Saturnalia Packs developed by artist, Hannah Fox, to help you with your celebrations including traditional recipes, Saturnalia Songs, and inspiration on themes, activities and making your own decorations.

Anyone can deliver activity – individuals, groups, businesses – and at any scale.

It can be a public event with tickets, or just with a group of friends, a business venture or a solo activity. All activities will be listed on the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Festival website to either advertise them or document them or both.

If you’re interested in delivering a Saturnalia activity, no matter how big or small, please complete the form below to register your interest:

Organisers are expected to be responsible for the management, safety, local marketing, and funding for their events, so please ensure you have considered this in putting yo

Don’t Mention the Wall

Our performance ‘Don’t Mention the Wall’ is an entertaining, humorous and imaginative journey into the meaning of the wall, and its similarities and differences with the Berlin Wall – and other walls, borders, as well as transformed, fallen or abandoned divisions.

We take a spoken- and sound-journey from wall to wall, and explore ways of getting over, past or beyond a wall, from one wall to another, creatively responding to space and place(s).

This show is adapted from our ‘Compressed Time Frames’ show, performed in Leeds and in Somerset, connected by the theme of ‘time’ , being at the heart of the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Festival. And so we respond to and imagine time on the wall, telling time- and places-tales beside the wall itself, at its tallest point.

The crumbling wall also illustrates the transformative power of time, along with its challenges, such as climate change, which is endangering our future as well as our past, our heritage and land-marks, and so we want to raise awareness of the impact of changes, not only social but environmental too.

Length of performance: Hadrian’s Wall took 6 years to be built, and the Berlin Wall fell 33 years ago on the day of this performance. We will translate that into performing 33 + 6, and so perform for 39 mins. If the weather is bad, then we calculate 33 – 6. and so perform for 27 mins.

If the weather is good, there will be time afterwards for (more) participative activities afterwards, such as connecting through a string of yarn across the wall, and sharing stories of crossing places.

Funding: We did not ask for funding for this particular event, as we recognise the importance of performing on the wall on our particular date of the 9th November – so are happy to give our homage to the Wall and the Festival.
